NEWS- Ugandan peacekeeping troops serving under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) on 11 October 2024 commemorated Uganda’s independence anniversary in Mogadishu, Somalia.
The ceremony hosted by Uganda’s Deputy Ambassador to Somalia Maj Gen (Rtd) Nathan Mugisha was graced by dignitaries, including Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, ATMIS Force Commander, Lt Gen Sam Kavuma, representing the Special Representative of Chairperson of the African Union (SRCC) Amb. Mohamed El-Amine Souef, and the Acting UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia, James Swan.
Somalia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, lauded Uganda as a beacon of hope for regional peace and commended its support to Somalia through ATMIS.
He highlighted Uganda’s pivotal role in supporting the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) through its participation in the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) since 2007, aiming to stabilize the country and create a secure environment for development and governance.
The ATMIS Force Commander, Lt Gen Sam Kavuma, emphasized the vital role played by Ugandan troops in upholding ideals of freedom, peace, and security in the African Union peacekeeping mission stating, “These gallant Ugandan men and women have demonstrated exceptional dedication, professionalism, and sacrifice.”
He paid tribute to the fallen Ugandan soldiers who dedicated their lives for the sake of peace and stability in Somalia, describing them as true African heroes.
The Deputy Ambassador, Maj Gen (Rtd) Nathan Mugisha reiterated Uganda’s commitment to strengthening regional and sub-regional organizations such as the African Union and East African Community as centers for promoting peace, security, economic development, good governance, and regional integration.
The Acting UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia, James Swan, expressed gratitude to Ugandan troops for their support in Somalia’s security gains, achieved not only through military dynamics but also diplomatic relations.
The ceremony, held under the theme, ‘A Recommitment to Secure and Fortify Our Destiny’, featured captivating cultural, musical, and artistic performances showcasing Uganda’s rich historical heritage, culture, and traditions.
The event was also attended by other distinguished individuals, including ATMIS Deputy Force Commander in Charge of Operations and Plans, Maj Gen Marius Ngendabanka, UN Secretary-General’s Deputy Special Representative for Somalia, Raisedon Zenenga, members of the Diplomatic Corp, Sector One Commander Brig Gen Anthony Lukwago Mbuusi, Brig Gen Joseph Ssemwanga, Brig Gen Keith Katungi, as well as Ugandans living and working in Somalia.
