The Police have confirmed that one suspected robber was today afternoon shot dead and another arrested morning after a failed daylight robbery at a mobile money outlet near Access Building in Kitintale, a suburb of Kampala.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango said tgat two robbers armed with a rifle stormed the shop and held up the mobile money agents, Ibrahim Ssebanenya and Rashid Kyeyune demanding cash.

The assailants began packing money into bags but were interrupted when the agents managed to escape and raise the alarm that raised commotion and residents quickly contacted Kitintale Police, who responded and pursued the fleeing suspects as they attempted to escape towards Bugolobi.

Onyango told journalists that ne of the robbers, identified as Farouk Matovu, was intercepted and arrested with the help of community members and he is currently detained at Jinja Road Police Station.

The second suspect, who remained unidentified at the time of reporting, continued to flee, firing gunshots in the air to deter boda boda riders and Police officers in pursuit and the chase ended in Bugolobi when a UPDF soldier guarding a nearby residence shot and killed the armed fugitive.

Onyango explained that the Police later recovered a rifle and two short magazines from the deceased suspect. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact amount of money stolen during the attempted heist and to trace any possible accomplices.

Onyango said that the scene was secured and is being processed by detectives and commended the quick response of the community and the Police team, but the incident adds to growing concerns over the safety of mobile money operators, who have become frequent targets of violent crime across the city some of whom have been killed.
