NEWS- A significant portion of Kabale Municipality residents have voiced their concerns over the scarcity of roadside dustbins, attributing it to the area’s deteriorating sanitation conditions.
During discussions with our reporter, pedestrians shared how they struggle in Kabale town due to the absence of convenient spots to dispose off their garbage.
Mathias Namanya, a local engineer, recounted an incident when he bought a soda in town but had no place to discard the empty bottle. He expressed frustration, noting that finding a roadside dustbin took him up to 15 minutes of walking.
Jungu Hamuza, popularly known as Hamza Rwakaraba, echoed Namanya’s sentiments, emphasizing how this situation not only inconveniences the residents but also adversely affects the town’s cleanliness. Hamuza questioned the disappearance of dustbins that were previously placed alongside roads by the municipal authorities.
Hamuza equally blamed the municipal authorities for neglecting the issue stressing that soon there will be a potential outbreak of diseases in the town due to improper waste disposal.
Akanyijika Allan, a student from Kabale University and a businessman in Mwanjari Old Market, shared his experience of being stranded with an empty mineral water bottle due to the absence of nearby dustbins. He urged the authorities to address this problem promptly.
Mukorerekyi Bright, also known as Bright Mubigungiro, reminisced about the days when roadside dustbins existed. He urged the Lord Mayor Sentaro of Kabale Municipality to reinstall the dustbins, expressing concern about the health risks posed by the accumulating garbage.
In response to these concerns, Alex Beingana, the Southern Division Town Clerk, confirmed that the Municipal Council had indeed installed roadside dustbins previously. However, they were misused whereby people would dump in children, pamper and peel, prompting their removal. Beingana mentioned the introduction of a new system with a dustbin allocated to every shop. Despite this effort, challenges persist for walkers and pedestrians.
Lord Mayor Byamugisha Emmanuel Sentaro acknowledged the problem and assured the residents that he and his Council would investigate the issue promptly. He revealed that the Municipal Council had procured Tukutuku for garbage collection but had not yet resumed their services.
The residents, deeply worried about their health, implore the authorities to take immediate action, reinstating the much-needed roadside dustbins to alleviate the growing garbage crisis in Kabale Town.
