NEWS- The Police in Kasese district have given an update on their findings in the death incident of a senior two student at Bwera Secondary School in Mpondwe – Lhubiriha Town Council.

The acting Rwenzori East Region Police spokesperson SP Luke Mbusa identified the deceased as Desmond Masereka 17, a senior two student who he confirms that he died from suffocation.

Mbusa told the press that the cause of the death according to the investigations was smoke from the cooking stove stressing that the case has been registered under SD REF 03/20/11/2023.

The Police spokesman confided to this reporter that the deceased, a Mukonzo by Tribe, was a senior two student of Bwera Secondary School revealing that the incident happened on 19th November 2023 at around 11:30Pm.

According to the Police, Rev Opolot Yozephano saw smoke coming from the house of the neighbor Katya Greyford and informed other neighbors who came to break the door to help the victim.

Mbusa adds that they found the whole house on fire and one student in the name of Masereka Desmond who was sleeping inside the same room was found dead lying on his father’s bed.

Police thereafter visited and cordoned off the crime scene for further management, a case of suspected arson registered and the body was evacuated to Bwera Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.

This becomes a third death of Secondary school students in Western Uganda in a space of less than two weeks now.

The incident comes days after a form five student in Bushenyi District was also pronounced dead after collapsing during an end year examination.

The deceased was identified by the Greater Bushenyi Region Police spokesman Marcial Tumusiime as Nickson Muyambi 20, a student at St. Kagwa Bushenyi High School, in Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality.

According to Tumusiime, Muyambi who hails from Kashare 1 village in Mirongo Parish of Kashare Sub County in Mbarara district died on Friday, November 17th 2023 at around 2:30Pm in the School’s science laboratory.

Days ago, another student Capson Rwamamanzi who was in form six at Kitagata Secondary School in Sheema District was found dead in a pit latrine after days missing.

Rwamamanzi was reported missing on Monday last week by the deputy headteacher Asaph Mwije and the Greater Bushenyi regional police spokesperson Martial Tumusiime told the press that the student was last seen on the school premises on Sunday.

Tumusiime says that his body was discovered on Wednesday in the school pit latrine that had collapsed on the day the student disappeared.  

Elly Biryomumaisho the headteacher of Kitagata secondary school said that the incident briefly disrupted the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) exams.
