NEWS- The Police in Rukungiri District have launched investigations into the cause of the fire that left Farmers and produce traders in Bikurungu Town Council in distress following the loss of their stock and milling machines.
On Sunday, March 2, 2025, at around 10 PM, a wildfire broke out at Charter Millers, a factory located in Western Ward near the Bikurungu Town Council roundabout. The fire destroyed the factory and stock worth billions of shillings.
The fire was reported by neighbors after the factory had closed. Although police were alerted, nothing could be salvaged.
Lydia Busingye, a single mother and casual laborer at the factory, shared her struggle to rescue stock and expressed deep concern for her survival, as she relied on the factory for income.
Emily Kemigisha, another displaced worker, suspected foul play in the fire outbreak. She expressed frustration and uncertainty about her future, as the factory was her main source of livelihood.
Juliet Kyarisiima, a widow who had worked at the factory for nine years, lamented the impact of the loss on her family’s progress and financial stability.
Emmanuel Turyatunga, a trader, revealed that he lost over 100 tonnes of coffee and rice in the fire. He expressed fears about his family’s future, as he now faces the possibility of selling his belongings to repay uninsured loans. He called on leaders to offer support.
Charles Mugabe, also known as Karoli, the proprietor of the destroyed factory, said he had no suspicion regarding the cause of the fire. He was left stranded by the loss, emphasizing that his firm served as a public granary for food security and market access, all financed through loans.
Esau Aharimpisya Karuhize, the Speaker of Bikurungu Town Council, acknowledged the public outcry over lost goods and market access. He called on the government to compensate Karoli, recognizing him as a key development partner.
Wilber Nayebare, the Town Clerk of Bikurungu Town Council, consoled Karoli, noting that his firm was one of the leading local revenue contributors. He assured that the town council would petition the government to seek compensation for the affected parties.
