Police in Kabale district is holding a 29-year old on charges of dealing in counterfeit currencies.
The suspect has been identified as Stuart Akantorona, a resident of Kabira cell, Kitumba sub county Kabale district. The suspect is reportedly been working with some other agents to circulate the counterfeit money and had managed to circulate millions of money to the public.
The Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson Elly Maate says that the suspect was arrested on Tuesday trying to persuade Joseph Kiganda, a technician with Uganda Telecom Company to join him in the business.
According to Kiganda, the suspect visited him in his home in Rwakaraba cell, Northern division in Kabale Municipality where he requested him to join the business promising to pay him 1.4 million shillings monthly.
“I got suspicious of the business this man was luring me into and I immediately informed police who in turn arrested him” Kiganda said.
Maate says that upon arresting the suspect, he was found with fake currency in the denominations of 50,000 shillings though he never specified the amounts they amounted to.
Maate added that “we will continue to hunt the people he is been dealing with so that they are eliminated from the community”.
He asked the public especially business operators to be conscious while dealing with suspicious customers saying that counterfeit dealers are on the rise in the country.
Ben Atwine, who owns a retail shop in Mwanjari trading centre said that on Monday, most of his colleagues suffered at the hands of people who were distributing counterfeits and causing them losses.
The matter was registered at Kabale SD 53/25/2/2020.
