Stakeholders in Rukiga District have urged the government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to prioritize sensitizing and empowering local communities on demanding accountability, saying that this is crucial for improving service delivery across the district.

They made the call today during a one day stakeholders engagement meeting to validate findings from citizen’s engagement in public accountability under the Strengthening Citizens’ Engagement and Public Accountability (SCEPA) Project.

The meeting held at Satellite Holiday Resort in Ntungamo, was organized by Local Sustainable Communities Organization (LOSCO), in partnership with the Uganda National NGO Forum (UNNGOF), supported by Denmark, Ireland and Sweden embassies in Uganda.

Led by the acting Executive Director of Community Empowerment, Henry Twinomujuni, the Rukiga District Education Officer, Vastine Beyendera, Barnabas Tugumisirize, Gideon Bandebaho and Agness Success, among others, observed that residents are largely unaware of the mechanisms for demanding accountability. This lack of public engagement, they asserted, has detrimentally affected both accountability and transparency.
