CDF Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba

The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has appointed Brig Gen Paul Muwonge the new commander of the UPDF Mountain Infantry Division based in Fort Portal in Western Uganda.

Brig Gen Muwonge has been elevated from his current position of Deputy Commander in the same Division, replacing Maj Gen James Birungi who assumed command in April this year.

Maj Gen Birungi now moves to Bujumbura in Burundi, as Uganda’s Military Attaché and Defence Advisor (DA) in the country.

In the same reshuffle, Brig Gen Simon Ochan who has been Uganda’s Defence Attache in Bujumbura has completed his tour of duty and will report back to the Joint UPDF Services headquarter for reassignment.

Maj Gen Birungi was until April this year the UPDF Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security (CDIS), after swapping positions with Maj Gen Richard Otto who previously commanded the Mountain Infantry Division for several years.

Brig Gen Muwonge who recently accompanied the Chief of Defence Forces on an official working trip to Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo, now also assumes command of the ongoing Operation Shujaa, a joint operation with DRC’s military forces (FARDC) to degrade and destroy the Allied Democratic Forces(ADF) terrorist group that operate in some parts of Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Military Assistant to the Chief of Defence Forces, Col Chris Magezi and the UPDF fraternity have congratulated the General officers upon  their new appointments and wishes them good luck in their new duties.
