NEWS- Residents of Kyenyabutongo village in Rushoroza Parish in Kihihi Sub-county are once again mourning the death of their village mates who was attacked and killed by an elephant last evening.

Kihihi Sub-county LC 3 Chairperson Nelson Natukunda has confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Nagaba Albert who hailed from the same area.

It’s reported that the marauding elephant attacked Nagaba who was in his rice fields and killed him on spot as he tried to free the scene, despite the presence of the electric fence.

He noted that while the government has begun fencing parts of the park in Kanungu, the section near the Ntungwa River bordering Rukungiri remains unfenced, allowing animals to stray into communities. He urged the government to compensate affected families and farmers.

Residents report frequent disturbances from elephants, lions, zebras, leopards, and crocodiles. Frustrated by the ongoing danger, they gathered at the scene, warning that they might take matters into their own hands if no action is taken to protect them.

Police from Kanungu Central Police Station responded promptly, and the body of Albert Nagaba was taken to Kihihi Health Center IV mortuary for a postmortem examination as relatives prepare for burial.

When contacted, the Uganda Wildlife Authority Communications Manager Bashir Hangi said that the deceased hailed from Kamwengye District and has come to grow rice when he met his death.
