NEWS- Kasese District Local Government is still lacking emergency equipment to facilitate response and rescue activities whenever disasters occur in the communities.
The district has for the last 1o years suffered severe disasters leaving at least 60 people dead and infrastructure worth shillings 86 billion destroyed.
The issue became a major concern among the members of the District Disaster Management Committee during their coordination meeting that was held at the boardroom of the new district administration block.
SP Wilfred Isaiah Bagenda, the Kasese Divisional Police Commander explained that they were sometimes frustrated by the lack of emergency equipment for use when it comes to evacuating and rescuing people from incidents of disasters.
According to Bagenda, it took them a lot of time to rescue the two children who had gotten stuck into the waters of River Mubuku in the past one week due to the lack of equipment.
Mr. Johnson Mwesige Sabuni, the District Senior Agricultural Officer, who chaired the meeting, said the district was still lacking funds to facilitate disaster responses and management activities, calling for support from development partners in addressing the challenges since disasters are unpredictable.
The Kasese District Senior Planner, Mr. Joseph Singoma who is also the Disaster Focal Person said a lot needs in addressing issues related to disasters. He observed the need for all the stakeholders to join the campaign of sensitizing the masses on disaster management in their respective communities.
Mr. Alfred Baluku, the Town Clerk for Maliba Sub-county cited the need for the masses to be sensitized about proper land use in an attempt to reduce on the rate of occurrence of disasters.

In another development, the South Rwenzori Diocesan Bishop, the Rt. Nason Baluku has appealed to the clergy to embrace teamwork as they serve the people of God.
The Prelate sounded the appeal yesterday while addressing the Diocesan Employees and Clergy that had gathered at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Kasese town for this year’s Easter Carol Service.
Bishop Baluku observed the need for teamwork among the clergy, encouraging them to seek support from colleagues where need be.
To the entire Christians, the Man of God discouraged them from engaging in sinful acts during the Easter Day celebrations and called for repentant lives among the people.
Meanwhile, at the Catholic Diocese of Kasese, Bishop Francis Acquirinus Kibira warned the youth against the practice of using social media platforms to search for potential husbands and wives. The Prelate instead implored them to use prayer so that God looks for them the rightful partners.
