KAMPALA- Uganda’s National Examinations body UNEB, on Thursday January 23rd 2025 announced that 722,730 candidates successfully passed the 2024 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), marking a significant improvement compared to the 648,662 who passed the previous year.

Releasing the results on Thursday, UNEB highlighted an overall pass rate of 91.8%, an increase from the 88% recorded in 2023. Despite the improved overall performance, fewer candidates achieved Division 1 compared to the previous year.

Performance Breakdown

Out of the candidates who passed:

  • 84,301 (10.7%) achieved Division 1.
  • 397,589 were placed in Division 2.
  • 165,284 earned Division 3.
  • 75,556 passed in Division 4.

Unfortunately, 64,251 candidates failed the exams, making them ineligible for admission to Senior One.

Gender Analysis

Male candidates performed better overall, with a lower failure rate compared to females. However, due to a higher number of female candidates registering and sitting for the exams, more girls appeared in Division 2 and the lower divisions.

Improved Performance

A larger proportion of candidates achieved results in Division 2 and above, with UNEB noting that the overall performance this year surpassed that of 2023.

Special Focus on Inmates

Candidates from Luzira Upper Prison School and Mbarara Main Prison Inmates Primary School also participated in the PLE, with commendable results:

  • At Luzira Upper Prison School, 51 candidates sat for the exams. Four passed in Division 1, 36 in Division 2, 13 in Division 3, and six in Division 4. None were ungraded, though 12 candidates did not sit for the exams.
  • At Mbarara Main Prison Inmates Primary School, 37 candidates registered for the exams. Of these, four passed in Division 1, 20 in Division 2, 10 in Division 3, and three in Division 4.

Notably, all candidates from the prison schools were male, reflecting ongoing efforts to provide education opportunities for inmates.

UNEB’s 2024 PLE results demonstrate steady progress in Uganda’s education system, highlighting improved pass rates and increased participation, especially among female candidates.
