RUKUNGIRI- Kutunga Dan Ruteijakare, the Principal Agricultural Inspector of Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries MAAIF has rallied farmers to adopt the modern farming methods brought by the technology enhancement for quality production and poverty eradication.

Ruteijakare said this in a two-day Stakeholder engagement workshop by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries aimed at introducing the Uganda Climate Smart Agriculture Transformation Project with an objective of Increasing Production and Productivity to improve Market access and increase resilience in Promoting Climate Smart related Activities to reduce green house gases related to Agriculture.

Ruteijakare revealed that this project is a six  year project that initiated in 2022 and is worth 354 million dollars and is meant to benefit over 13.5 million Ugandan farmers across the country. He added that for Rukungiri alone, the project beneficiaries will be over 10,000 farmers mainly livestock farmers and coffee growers.

He also revealed that Ministry of Agriculture will work hand in hand with the Government to transform and develop Cooperative groups to provide market for the farmers’ produce where he advised farmers to produce quality farm products that will create their own markets in the country and in the world markets.

He encouraged the farmers to form groups of between 15 and 20 people and reach out to the district Agricultural leaders for extensive guidance on how to acquire support where they will be provided with quality seedlings, livestock breeds, and quality fish species from this new project.

Kyomukama Geoffrey, the Rukungiri District Chairperson welcomed the project revealing that it will help in the introduction of new modern farming methods that will help farmers to produce quality and quantity farm produce as well as transforming people from subsistence farming to commercial production.

Kyomukama added that agriculture is the back bone of our country but has been challenged by the poor farming methods that farmers have been using to which he urged them to transform to the new methods for increased Productivity.
