NEWS- The Rushenyi Member of Parliament Hon Naome Kabasharira on Friday 16th February 2024 rewarded the best performing candidates in 2023 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) and urged the school heads to fight failures in public schools.
The pupils were rewarded with blankets, mattresses, mathematical sets, books and pens to start with as they join secondary level, also subsidization to their parents shopping.
MP Kabasharira noted that a candidate who completely fails PLE has nowhere to go after enjoying government resources and parental care for the entire seven years.
Hon. Naome Kabasharira highlighted some of the challenges leading to poor performance among schools in Rushenyi County, citing, teachers’ late coming, poor lesson planning, government teachers part timing in private schools, poor coordination in management committees, alcoholism among others.
The legislator requested the teachers and private school proprietors with the vice of convincing the best pupils from government schools to join them in private disguising that they will give them bursaries terming it a bad image for the future of these schools.
The Ntungamo District Education Officer Mr Fred Bahati said that Ntungamo performed better as compared to the last three years including the missed one 2021 that was troubled by COVID 19.
Mr Bahati said decent performance is a combination of all stakeholders in the education system that include parents, pupils, teachers, heads of schools, directors and the education heads of departments at the district.
Rev Benson Nahoora the head teacher of Kamahuri Model primary school that came the first in performance underlined some of the factors why the school performed better, including strong warnings on absenteeism of both teachers and pupils, good response of parents, good scheming and lesson plans among others.
The newly posted inspector of schools in Rushenyi County Robert Tuzarirwe called for commitment and consistency among teachers, school heads and district stakeholders for better performance.
A pupil from Nyakariro primary school Charity Komujuni hailed the support secured by their area Member of Parliament Hon Kabasharira and promised to keep on the good performance when she joins secondary school.
Ms Joy Katiti, a parent to a pupil who was rewarded, welcomed the support that included some scholastic materials which she said was a reduced burden to her shopping expenditure as child prepares for the next Education level.
Head teachers attributed the poor performance in some schools in Rushenyi County to understaffing.
