BULAMBULI- Thousands of supporters, friends, and relatives gathered in celebration on Saturday in Pondo to welcome Mr. Ignatius Wamakuyu Mudimi, the Member of Parliament for Elgon County in Bulambuli District, following his release on bail after spending 68 days in Luzira Prison on allegations of corruption.
The legislator allegedly faced charges of diverting public resources and conspiring to defraud the government between 2019 and 2023, was granted bail by Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga of the Anti-corruption court in Kampala.
Addressing the media, Mudimi said “I prefer not to discuss the matter currently before the court, as it’s sub judice. Let’s allow the court to handle the investigations”
“These are mere allegations, and if they were true, I would have been convicted by now. Even the state knows this.” Mudimi said.
“While in prison, access to many aspects of life is limited, but I’m not the first person to be imprisoned. Luzira Prison was built in 1927, and many have been incarcerated and released since then. What I missed most were my people. Unfortunately, we lost many while I was away, and I didn’t get the chance to pay my condolences. Now that I’m back, I’ll start from there,” he emphasized
The Bulambuli District LCV Chairperson, Ms. Annet Nandudu, informed Bugisu intellectual forum that as the district chairperson, we have faced a big loss due to Mudimi’s imprisonment.
He secured Sh2 billion for the district administration block and was taken into custody during the parliamentary budget process, depriving the district of his lobbying efforts. Specifically he was advocating for Sh1.5 billion for the construction of Buluganya Health Center IV. However, his imprisonment led to the withdrawal of these funds.
She questioned whether the funds were meant for Mudimi’s personal benefit or for the community.
Ms. Nandudu lamented that patients from Buluganya Health Center IV have been transferred to Mbale regional Hospital but dies on the way.
Nevertheless, she expressed gratitude to the government, led by President Museveni, for granting Mudimi bail, allowing him to continue representing his constituents in Parliament while reporting to court.
Wetaka Milton, the District Councilor representing the people of Buginyanya Sub County in Elgon North, expressed his joy to Bugisu Intellectual, saying that today’s celebration of Mudimi’s bail is a testament to how much we have missed him.
“He has been a father figure to the people of Bulambuli, renowned for his kindness and dedication to development.” Wetaka said.
