KAMPALA- The Criminal Investigations Directorate-CID and Crime Intelligence-CI have launched a manhunt for unknown assailants who killed the manager of Africa Oil fuel station on the northern bypass.
Police Spokesperson, Kituma Rusoke has identified the victim as Agnes Nantongo, a Matuga resident, was attacked and killed near Agenda Bridge on the Northern Bypass after being struck with a blunt object.
While addressing the security Press-briefing at Naguru Police Headquarters, Kituuma said the victim’s body was found in a shrub by the roadside in the wee-hours of Saturday. However, the family refuted police preliminary findings that suggested she was attacked while jogging.
Lucky Nakyobe, Agnes Nantongo’s sister, told this reporter, Agnes’ phone remained unreachable throughout the night. The family didn’t immediately raise an alarm, assuming she was at church for Saturday overnight.
“We assumed she was away for the night, but we were shocked to see her picture circulating on social media the next morning. We immediately rushed to her workplace, but she wasn’t there. We then checked at her church in Namugongo, where we learned that morning joggers had discovered her body.” Nakyobe said.
According to Nakyobe, police initially misunderstood the tracksuit Agnes wore, thinking she was jogging. However, Nakyobe clarified that it was her sister’s usual Saturday attire. She added that Agnes typically walked a short distance from Africa Oil station to catch a taxi to Bwaise, and then transferred to another taxi to reach her home in Matuga.
Nakyobe suspects that her sister was murdered by thugs attempting to steal her belongings. “Perhaps they tried to snatch her bag and phone, and she resisted, leading to a fatal head injury,” Nakyobe suspected.
Rusoke has said that police were alerted by the passersby about a lifeless woman lying in the shrub by the roadside.
“The investigation is ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding Agnes Nantongo’s death. The Uganda Police Force urges anyone with information regarding this case to contact the Kireka police station or any nearest police station.” Onyango said.
