RUKUNGIRI- Members of Bwambara Leo’s club under Bwambara Lions and Lions Club International recently spent a day cleaning Bikurungu Town Council in Rukungiri District, as part of their efforts to ensure environmental conservation.

According to Ms Joan Atuhaire, the Bwambara Leo’s Chairperson, One of their vision for this month is environmental protection and they thus decided to do cleaning, picking up of litter in Bikurungu town council as it’s a busy area that has many activities carried out therein.

Atuhaire was grateful that they received massive boost from the area leadership and the community in carrying out this activity “Environmental Protection and Conservation” stressing that what they were doing is among the core objectives of Lions Club International.

The Club Chairperson stressed that they chose to start with Bikurungu Town Council since it has many people visiting, since its a gateway to Queen Elizabeth National Park and Rwenshama Landing Site, making it prone to having a lot of litter.

The activity was also to act as an example to the people on how they can always care for the environment in a bid to keep it unharmed through proper waste management and cleaning.

Kyomuhendo Beatrice a market vendor in Bikurungu Town Council expressed gratitude to the club members for thinking about cleaning their market place that was in dire need since many people just dispose off waste materials without minding about its effect to the environment.

Kyomuhendo confided to our reporter that together with fellow vendors have now understood how best and why they should practice better methods of waste disposal.

Mr. Namanya Lauben, the Central ward councilor and Secretary for production hailed the Leo’s Club of Bwambara and Bikurungu Modern Secondary School and asked for continuous visits and similar activities to the area.

Namanya stressed that although the Club’s intention was mainly environmental conservation, but it will in turn boost the Community’s sanitation since the waste itself could have led to occurrence on poor health sicknesses.

Among other activities they did was visiting Bwambara Modern Secondary School where they talked to students about environmental conservation, how to avoid early pregnancy and proper waste disposal.

Environmental protection is aimed at maintaining (and recovering where necessary) a healthy natural environment. Sustainable development embraces environmental, social and economic objectives, to deliver long-term equitable growth which benefits current and future generations.
