The Police in Kisoro District are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a 37 year old woman identified as Irankunda Desire, who was originally charged with aggravated robbery but escaped from the hospital bed where she had been admitted.

Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman Elly Maate confirmed the death saying that Irankunda was lynched yesterday at Bupfumfu village in Rwaramba Parish in Nyakinama Sub-county in the Kisoro District.

Maate explained that it’s alleged that the victim was arrested on 13th May 2025 arrested on charges of aggravated robbery together with 5 other suspects and on the 20th May 2025 they were taken to Mbarara Central Police Station upon the request from the flying squad for further management on other related robbery charges within western region.

The same suspects were returned to Kisoro on 29th May 2025 however, Irankunda now deceased developed health complications and she was rushed to Kisoro Police Health Center for treatment but her condition worsened and was referred to Kisoro General Hospital for further management on 2nd May w025.

Two Police officers were deployed to guard the suspect at Kisoro hospital that included Masereka Ronald for day shift and Musinguzi Alex for night shift.

It’s further alleged that Detective Constable Masereka Ronald worked up to and handed over duty to the hospital bed she Musinguzi  who at around 2100hrd reported that the suspect had escaped from the hospital.

Efforts to have the suspect re arrested have been underway until last night when the local residents sited him at Bupfumfu village and  assaulted him to death. 

A case file of murder by mob has been opened to assist in inquiries, the crime scene was visited, processed and documented and the bùody was conveyed to Kisoro general hospital for postmortem examination.
