ASP Elly Maate the Kigezi regional Police spokesman

NEWS– The Police in Kabale district have arrested a security guard allegedly for aggravated robbery of market foodstuffs.

The suspect has been identified as Andrew Muhwezi 47, a Mukiga by tribe, and a security guard attached to Securiko Uganda Limited residing in Nyakahita cell, Kyanamira sub-county in Kabale district.

ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesman informed our reporter that on April 18, 2024, at around 2am, in Kigongi “A” cell, Central Division, Kabale Municipality, the suspect, armed with a rifle bearing the serial number SAR UG POL 0019-015183 loaded with five rounds of ammunition, trespassed into Kabale Central main market.

Muhwezi thereafter robbed merchandise belonging to three different people worth four hundred forty thousand shillings.

Maate confided to the press that Constable Muhumuza George, guarding the market, was very alert on duty and saw the suspect carrying a bag while descending the steps of the market and ordered him to stop. 

However, the suspect sped off, attempting to find the exit gate to the market. Maate added that the Police officers was forced to shoot as the suspect pointed the gun against him and was subsequently apprehended and taken to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for treatment. 

Once he recovers, he will be moved to answer the alleged charges according to Maate.

Maate confirmed that the matter was registered at Kabale Police station, a team led by Deputy Superintendent Mukama Hakim, the District CID officer, visited and documented the scene, obtained relevant statements, and recovered some exhibits of stolen merchandise, including sweet bananas, carrots, beans, and apples. 

These items were photographed and later handed over to the owners and Maate disclosed that the suspect’s firearm was exhibited as evidence and is subject to ongoing inquiries.
