UNEB gives green light on Candidates’ registration, final examination

KAMPALA- The Uganda National Examination Board-UNEB, together with the police have deployed about 1,739 personnel, comprising 539 security staff and 1,200 scouts, to guarantee a secure environment for the exams.

This is in response to today’s start of examinations across the country, According to statistics from UNEB, a total of 379,748 candidates have begun their Uganda Certificate of Education exams at various centers nationwide, with 369,601 following the new curriculum and 10,147 sitting for transitional exams under the old curriculum.

UNEB spokesperson, Jenifer Kalule said that the candidates are sitting from 4,168 examination centers around the country including Luzira Upper Prison and Mbarara prison. She has however, warned candidates, teachers and invigilators against taking part in exam malpractice that will lead to dire consequences.

Of these, 369,601 sit for these exams on the new curriculum while 10,147 will sit for the transitional examinations under the old curriculum.

Addressing Journalists at Naguru Police Headquarters said, UNEB has deployed over 1200 scouts along with 539 security personnel across the country to deter high chances of participation in acts of malpractice.

 “UNEB is partnering with various security agencies as well as contracted professionals to ensure the security of the examinations is guaranteed. Over 1,200 scouts have been deployed countrywide, along with 539 security personnel.”Kalule said.

Parents have been cautioned against dealing with fraudsters who are out there trying to trick unsuspecting members of the public that they have some exams. “Our security teams have already caught up with some of them. The Magistrate’s Court in Tororo last week remanded two of the suspected scammers to prison over the same matter.” Kalule.

Kituuma Rusoke, Police Spokesperson, stated that police deployment includes not only exam security but also liaison officers at each UNEB center to investigate suspected malpractice. Under Section 25(1) of the UNEB Act 2021, individuals who obtain or attempt to obtain unauthorized access to exam papers or materials face penalties: up to 10 years imprisonment, a fine of 40 million shillings, or both.
