Teachers at Kisoro Central Police Station

NEWS- Kisoro district authorities on Wednesday January 17th 2024 arrested 47 teachers and school heads found teaching during the holiday in a security led operation.

The Operation saw more than 46 teachers and 1 head teacher arrested for breaching government rule in a security led operation. Sources indicate that Schools including Muhabura shine, standard senior secondary school, Mother care primary school, Zion Primary School, Bright valley Primary School, Read Primary School, Savior ss, Kisoro vision ss, among others were found teaching in the holidays.

The Kisoro district education officer Emmanuel Mwunvaneza said that operation was meant to implement the resolution passed by the state minister for higher education John Chrysostom Muyingo that schools should not teach during the holidays till the official opening date for second term which is Monday 5th Feb, 2024.

The UNATU chairperson Kisoro district Alex Matata admitted the apologies for the ongoing illegal teaching in schools and requested that teachers be cautioned and forgiven. Matata added that teachers should use holidays as time to establish projects at their homes and do more about what will develop their families other than keeping grip at schools to teach during holidays.

The Kisoro district boss Abel Bizimana castigated these educationists for going against the law of the land and warned them of repercussions that came with disobedience.

Bizimana added that teachers tend to go and work for only Ugx 10,000 every day during holiday teaching, of which when they are arrested and taken to prison; they end up spending more than that.

The Kisoro district assistant chief administrative officer Rukundo Manase revealed that teachers and directors should obey rules of the education ministry adding that it is very unfortunate for teachers to be undisciplined by teaching during the holidays.

Kisoro Resident District commissioner Hajji Badru Sebyala said that teachers should be positive examples of following the law cautioning other sub counties that are still operating holiday teachings to stop immediately or else they also face arrest.

The Kisoro district police commander Benard Mugerwa said that the security team started its operations early in the morning and ended up arresting over 47 teachers. Mugerwa told the press that he has been watching the schools opening during holidays stressing that his operations will not cease until the right protocol is observed.

According to the source, both Primary and Secondary Schools were formally informed on Tuesday 16th January 2024 to close, failure of which they would be arrested and face the consequences.
