President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on April 30th launched Uganda’s first homemade Anti- Tick vaccine and Production facility situated at the National Livestock Resources Research Institute – Namulonge and committed Ugx 600 billion support to scale up the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) vaccine HUB.
The facility at Namulonge which cost Ugx 170 billion has been funded by Government of Uganda for years when the livestock Anti-Tick vaccine efforts commenced by Ugandan researchers at the National Agricultural Research Organization to address the ticks threat to livestock in the country.
While speaking at the event, President Museveni reaffirmed Uganda’s unstoppable transformation trends in scientific innovations as it’s currently state of development since the the NRM government assumed power and evolved the country through the minimum economic recovery stage, economy expansion, diversification, value addition to now science and technological stage.
The President also proposed a tax waiver to scientists enhanced salaries as a motivation to enhance their performance saying that when it’s done as it is done for soldiers ut will enable them enhance their performance and expedite Uganda’s transformation in science fileds.
President Museveni cited numerous achievements registered in scientific innovation that he attributes to enhanced support for science and innovation that has seen the production of vaccines and other scientific innovation of significance to the national economy and explained how the Ugandan invented Anti-Tick vaccine is revolutionary to the livestock sector.
While speaking at the same event, the Minister of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries Hon Frank Tumwebaze notes that Uganda’s Anti-Tick vaccine production is an indicator of agricultural research institutions capacity to elevate beyond academic research to produce actual marketable and competitive products.
Minister Tumwebaze noted that the 36 million annual dose production capacity of the just commissioned National Agricultural Research Organization Anti-Tick vaccine manufacturing plants will significantly address the country’s livestock vaccine demand.
Minister Tumwebaze explained how government plans to enhance research accross the 16 Agro Agro-industrial zones and integration of farmers to benefit from the ongoing research innovations.
The Minister of State for Animal Industry Hon Bright Rwamiramat highlighted Uganda’s improvements in animals genetics, nutrition and animal health including animals population attributed to the sector’s strategic interventions by government
Minister Rwamirama asked President Museveni to advocate for more resouces for sufficient vaccine supplies and warned against threats of acaricides on the livestock market.
The Director General of The National Agricultural Research Organization Dr Yonah Baguma presented a detailed status report on the capacity of Uganda’s Anti-Tick vaccine facility at the National Livestock Resources Research Institute – Namulonge.
The National Drug Authority Executive Director Dr David Nahamya confirmed the that Uganda’s Anti-Tick vaccine facility at the National Livestock Resources Research Institute – Namulonge has attained all prerequisite accreditation to local and broader markets
He has asked President Museveni to support their call for a Ugx 600 billio for the establishment of the NARO vaccine HUB to produce more vaccine varieties and said the vaccine is projected to scale to East Africa and International International licensure.
