Grace Baguma, a second-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication, has been elected the Guild President of Team University on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket. The official announcement came from the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Ezra Mugabe, on Friday, revealing that Baguma garnered 1,688 votes, defeating independent candidate Owen Sserumaga, who received 759 votes.
In his victory speech, Baguma expressed gratitude, stating, “I praise God for this win,” and emphasized his commitment to improving the welfare of students at Team University. He outlined his goals for his term, including the procurement of a Guild Van, the establishment of a standard canteen, and enhancing sports programs to increase student participation in inter-university competitions.
“Promoting student talents is paramount. We cannot develop these talents without engaging with other institutions in sports,” Baguma remarked. He also highlighted her appointment of a skilled sports minister, a former athlete since primary school, who she believes will significantly enhance student talent development.
Baguma noted, “Previously, we only participated in cultural galas, which showcased the talents of students from various tribes. Now, we will actively engage the administration and students in sports as well.”
Following his victory, Baguma appointed Shafigah Nanyondo as Vice President, Shamilla Mbabazi as Minister of Finance, Duncan Ayebare as Secretary General, and Hezekia Abaho as Sports Minister, among other positions.
Ellen Kinuge, the Dean of Students, praised the peaceful nature of the election and campaigns. “I want to thank everyone who participated in the campaigns and elections. Your maturity has been evident, and we hope you will lead the students well and leave Team University better than you found it,” she said.
The election marks a significant moment in student governance at Team University, showcasing a commitment to peaceful and mature political engagement among students.
