Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak has passed on, in Cairo at the age of 91.

His death was confirmed by Egyptian state news late yesterday Tuesday reporting that he died at a military hospital.

Early January Mubarak underwent surgery but he has been showing signs of recovery.

However, over the weekend, Mubarak’s son Alaa said that the former president remained in intensive care.

Mubarak who spent three decades in office before a popular uprising that swept across Egypt was ousted by the military in 2011 and charged in courts of law.

Mubarak, in 2012, was sentenced to life imprisonment following the deaths of over 900 protesters killed by security forces during the uprising across Egypt.

More serious charges against Mubarak were later overturned and he was released in 2017.

Who was Mubarak?

Hosni Mubarak, was born in 1928, joined the army as a teenager recruited in the air force he went on to play a revolutionary role in the 1973 Arab-Israeli war.

He became president, following the assassination of President Anwar Sadat, and was a pivot player in the Israel-Palestinian peace process.
