KAMPALA- The Rukungiri Municipality MP, Elisa Rutahigwa has called on Gov’t to expedite the distribution of relief items in his area, following the heavy rains that led to the destruction of crops, leaving many residents with no food to eat.
He made these remarks this afternoon at the floor of Parliament of Uganda as members of Parliament raised issues of national importance.
He revealed that these days various areas in Rukungiri municipality have received heavy rains which have negatively affected homes and destroyed crops where the affected areas are in Southern Division in Ndorero, Nyakibare, Kibirizi, Nyaruzinga , Kitazigurukwa among other areas .
Hon Rutahigwa explained to Parliament that these crops were severely affected and up to now, people have challenges in what to eat hence asking the Minister of Relief and Disaster Preparedness to expedite the process of availing relief food to the affected areas in Rukungiri municipality.
He further requested the minister of relief and disaster preparedness to also make sure that residents in the affected areas get plant materials like beans and cassava cuttings so that they can use the remaining season to do replanting if they are to overcome alarming hunger in the coming month.

The state minister of relief and disaster preparedness Hon Lillian Aber said she has noted the concerns raised by the Rukungiri Municipality legislator Hon Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa and they will deliver the relief items to the affected areas as soon as they receive a report from the disaster committee.
Hon Aber added that on planting materials she will coordinate with the ministry of agriculture to deliver them to the affected areas in Rukungiri municipality as soon as possible if they are in stores.
