NEWS- The Police in Kabale District have arrested a 33 year old businessman identified as Tumanye Steven a resident of Kashamunyoro village in Kitumba Sub county over alleged defilement of a 13 year old girl.
The suspect was arrested with his sister Ahimbisibwe Judith a resident of Rwakashende Village in Kyanamira Sub County in Kabale district who is suspected to have connived with the defiler in committing the offence.
Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman Elly Maate told journalists that the case was reported at Kabale Police Station by Kyanamira Sub county, Musinguzi Joshua, a resident of Kangazi cell in Kyanamira Subcounty county in Kabale District.
Information obtained by the Police allege that on 12th August 2024, the suspected defiler went to Nyamarindira village in Kamuganguzi Sub county in Kabale district looking for workers, he came across the victim at her parents’ home whom she convinced to employ as a maid and promised her good monthly payment.
Its reported that the victim accepted to go and work and was trafficked from Nyamarindira village to Rwashende village, Kyanamira Sub county without notice and consent of her parents and started working as a maid.
That upon reaching in Kyanamira, the suspect showed the victim household chores to do and also told her to stay with his sister Ahimbisibwe Judith which the victim accepted, but the following day, the suspect went at the home of his sister home in Rwakashende where she found the victim in the bedroom and once again promised her better pay and that he would later marry her.
Its reported that it was at that time while in the bedroom, that the suspect began caressing and romancing the victim whereupon, he removed her knicker and eventually defiled her while his sister was outside after which he went back to his place in Kashamunyoro village.
Maate explained that it was also established that on 15th Augut 2024, the suspect went back at his sisters place and found the victim home alone and convinced her to enter the house and eventually had defiled her again and on 19th August he went with the victim to Rwashende Trading Centre and bought local brew (omunamba), but upon seeing them, the residents asked the suspect whether the victim was his new wife but he claimed that the victim was his biological daughter.
It was at this time that the residents got concerned and since they were not convinced with the suspect explanation, they called the Area chairperson who also alerted the Kyanamira Sub county Councilor about the new girl on the village.
Upon interview, the victim revealed that she was in Rwashende to work as maid and was not a biological daughter to the suspect; she also revealed how the suspect has been having sexual intercourse under the pretext of promising her better pay.
The District Councilor together with Area chairperson arrested the suspects 21st August together with the victim and later called the Police for further management and the case was registered and a case of aggravated trafficking and aggravated Defilement was registered under reference number CRB 632/2024 to investigate the matter.
According to Maate, the District CID officer Hakim Mukama, Scene of Crime Officer and other Sexual Gender Based Violence detectives visited the scene where relevant statements of witnesses were obtained and relevant exhibits retrieved from the scene and suspects arrested and in Police custody awaiting to be taken to court.
