NEWS- Teachers from Kabale District Under their Umbrella Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU) are demanding the government to establish exams from the center by National Examinations at Lower primary level at least at primary four to enable learners to get prepared for the primary leaving examinations.

This was revealed during a one-day workshop which was organized by Let Us Save Uganda Development Initiative (LUSIDI) together with UWEZO Pre –Assessment report of 2021 held at Kirigime guest house in Kirigime ward, southern division Kabale municipality.

The teachers led by their chairpersons Musiimenta Amos UNATU chairperson Kabale district and Geoffrey UNATU chairperson Kabale municipality agitated the government to set exams for lower level learners in primary three and four in order to boost their performances in primary leaving examination (PLE) at the end of primary level.

The Kabale municipality principal education officer Grace Munyambazi said that as authorities they have no problem with any national exam at lower primary levels as long as it is in the line with the guidelines with national examining body Uganda national examinations board (UNEB).

He however attributed poor performance of learners to teachers who don’t teach accordingly, learners absenteeism and parents who don’t provide the needs of children.

However the Kabale district education officer Mr. Moses Bwengye appreciated the government for the introduction of the new curriculum that provides competencies based on skills rather than theoretical based training to the learners.

He placed poor performance on the student teacher ratio which hinders teachers from concentrating on teaching learners and teachers who don’t follow up to assess the learners level of competency.

According to the UWEZO 2021 assessment district by Combined Literacy and Numeracy competency vs PLE 2022 Divisions 1&U report, Kabale district became the 12th with out of 29 districts in which this research was conducted.
