KAMPALA– Uganda Police Force has said that they are stuck with seven bodies from Kiteezi collapsed landfill who are not claimed by families at Mulago City Mortuary.
On Sunday, police said that so far 21 bodies were retrieved in the second day of rescue operations, being conducted jointly by Police, Ministry of works, KCCA and the Red Cross.
The Police Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police Kituuma Rusoke, has said out of 21 retrieved bodies, 14 have been handed over to the families for burial.
Kituuma explains that they remain with 7 bodies that are not claimed at city mortuary Mulago, waiting for their families, yet they anticipate more bodies.
“Our teams are still on the ground, trying to see that we can retrieve more trapped people either as survivors or dead. We have seven bodies still at the mortuary but we have not seen their families.” Kituuma said.
The remaining seven bodies are still in the mortuary Mulago, Kituuma said they remain hopeful that the relatives will come forward to claim these bodies, adding that there is no need for DNA test, since bodies were not burnt or in decomposing state.
President Yoweri Museveni addressed the tragedy on his X account (formerly Twitter), directing the State House Comptroller to provide financial assistance to the families of the deceased, offering five million shillings per person, and one million shillings to those injured.
