NEWS- The International Criminal Court has today added three new charges to the case against fugitive Ugandan rebel leader Joseph Kony, raising the total number of counts to 39.
The elusive head of the Lord’s Resistance Army, Joseph Kony has been on the run since the International Criminal Court issued a warrant for his arrest in 2005.
He was initially charged with 36 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity, committed during the LRA’s brutal insurgency across northern Uganda and neighbouring countries.
The International Criminal Council outreach officer for Uganda, Ms Maria Mabinty Kamara, said that the amended charges follow the emergence of new evidence, including testimony from a victim who suffered persecution, rape and sexual slavery.
Kony is accused of orchestrating attacks on civilians in eight locations, including Lwala Girls’ Secondary School in Kalaki District, and seven Internally Displaced People’s camps at Abia, Abok, Lukodi, Pagak, Pajule/Lapul, Odek and Barlonyo.
