KAMPALA- The office of the Prime Minister (OPM) on Tuesday, March 11th 2024 dispatched the last batch of the iron sheets that were pledged by President Yoweri Museveni to the people of Karamoja especially the Karacunas.
The iron sheets are part of the over 100,000 iron sheets token promised by president Yoweri Museveni to the reformed Karamojong warriors locally referred to as Karacunas who voluntarily handed over guns to the government and embraced peace.
While presiding over the flagging off exercise at OPM stores in Namanve this afternoon, Dr. Peter Lokeris the minister for Karamoja affairs lauded president Museveni for his efforts to pacify Karamoja.
Lokeris flanked by his junior minister Florence Nambozo says that the iron sheets will be given to the intended beneficiaries by the district leadership in the region.
Lokeris says that the over 11, 168 iron sheets will be distributed to the reformed Karacunas who missed out in the first phase.
Ministers Lokeris and Nambozo appeal to the Karamojong to prioritize peace if they are to develop the area which has the potential to feed the country.
Robert Ssemwogerere Mugarura, the undersecretary in charge of Pacification and development in the office of the prime minister says that government is determined to transform Karamoja sub region.
Ssemwogerere says that the distribution of iron sheets will address the nomadic way of life for people in Karamoja to settle down and develop.
Each of the beneficiaries will receive 26 pieces of iron sheets to help them build more permanent houses.
In total OPM has so far released 108, 720 iron sheets to the Karacunas and the vulnerable people in Karamoja.
