NEWS– The Police in Rukiga have mounted a hunt for a yet to be identified motorist involved in a hit and run accident that claimed the life of a 67-year-old pedestrian.
The incident according to ASP Elly Maate the Kigezi Region Police spokesman occurred on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at approximately 7:30 PM at Kitaburaza cell along the Kabale-Ntungamo highway in Rukiga district.
Maate told the press that the victim, Mbetabaitu Christopher, a Mukiga by tribe and resident of Kitaburaza cell, Nyakabengo parish, Bukinda sub-county, Rukiga district, was struck and killed instantly by the suspected motorist who is currently yet to be known.
It is reported that Mbetabaitu, who was allegedly intoxicated, was attempting to cross the road from a nearby junction to his home when he was hit by a speeding car.
The Police PRO confirmed that they were notified and promptly arrived at the scene to document the incident, deceased’s body was transported to his home adding that the primary cause of the accident is believed to be pedestrian carelessness.
Maate stressed that investigations are ongoing to establish the identity of the motorist so that s/he is brought to book to answer charges related to the incident.
In a related development, the Police in Sheema district are investigating circumstances surrounding the suspected murder of a yet to be identified man by unknown people.
SSP Marcial Tumusiime the Greater Bushenyi Region Police spokesman told the press that on Wednesday, 22nd May 2024, Sheema Police received information from Nuwagira Bashaija Chairman, Bisharara cell, Kiziba ward, Kagango division in Sheema Municipality that there was a body of an unknown male adult in his cell.
Tumusiime adds that Police rushed to the scene and found the body of the deceased lying in the banana plantation.
The officers who visited the scene included incharge homicide, SOCO who introduced the K-9 at the scene but it couldn’t lead them to discovery of any suspect and the body was taken to Kabwohe Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem examination.
The Police Spokesperson adds that inquiries into the matter are still at hand to establish the identity of the deceased and the criminals behind this act.
