Cattle in Rubare market

NEWS- Ntungamo authorities on Wednesday, October 23rd 2024 eased the transportation of domestic animals and their products by opening Rubaare cattle market which has been under bars for over nine months.

The market has not been operational after it was closed due to the outbreak of foot and mouth disease that affected many cattle corridors.

The mayor Rubaare Town council Mr Benson Kansiime confirmed to our reporter that the market is now open after the confirmation that all herds of cattle were vaccinated and no worries about the disease.

Kansiime added that the market which has been operating twice in a month will now operate weekly on Wednesday to cover-up the wasted months and will maintain the status quo.

The town clerk Rubaare Town Council Emmanuel Byamukama emphasized the importance of opening Rubaare cattle market that some cattle keepers and business community are relieved since they are now sure of getting money from their animals and their products to pay school fees and look after their families.

Byamukama stressed that they want to revamp the cattle market fence by replacing the vandalized metal wires and poles to stop escapism of cattle from the market.

Danson Karegyeya from Kitembe parish, Nyarutuntu a cattle business man rejoiced the reopening of the market stressing people were chocking on poverty due to the quarantine.

He said that the heifer could be sold between 1,500,000= to 1,600,000=

John Tumusiime another cattle trader from Nyamurindira, said that since the market was closed, they have been trekking long distance to Kamwezi in search of cows that would also be costly to them, but now optimistic that reopening of this market will solve their issues.

Isaac Arindamukama who hails from Kabungo, a goat trader said that the market was expensive where by the last price of a big goat was between Ugx 380,000 to 400,000.

Over 700 cows, 200 goats and sheep thronged the market on the reopening day.
