NEWS– As the state of roads in Rukungiri district continue to deteriorate every day that goes by, one of the residents eyeing the Rukungiri District chairmanship Eng Angelo Twinomuhangi has expressed dismay of the current state of infrastructure in the district.
Eng Twinomuhangi, who hails from Rubabo’s Nyakishenyi sub county stresses that state of Nyarushanje- Nyabushenyi- Kyabamba to Nyakabungo road that falls under the docket of the district is a clear indication that Rukungiri district leadership has done nothing to the people who elected them.
According to Twinomuhangi, together with other concerned resident, they have issued a two weeks’ ultimatum to the district chairman and his DEC members to have the above road worked on, or else they will demonstrate.
He is concerned that despite the government increasing the road fund disbursement to the districts, the said road has never been graded nor renovated in about two past decades, rendering its state imotorable especially during the rains.
The road is a connection of the two sub Counties of Nyarushanje and Nyakishenyi to the Rukungiri Municipality and is important for transportation of goods especially agricultural produce that would earn them a living.
Twinomuhangi is concerned that despite several calls to have the road renovated, nothing has been under Geoffrey Kyomukama’s tenure.
“Am optimistic that the money given to our district for this role should be enough to have our roads maintained to ease mobility, and I want to assure you that the current state is due to incompetent leadership in our district” he said.
Eng Twinomuhangi who is eyeing the District top Political seat stresses that his leadership will focus much on infrastructure development that will in turn help the residents improve on their social economic welfare.
“We need not to give people money to vote or love us. No, all we need is empowering these people to start earning for themselves” he noted.
In response, Kyomukama pointed out that the district is already planning to work on the said road calling for calm as they finalise plans to have this issue sorted since the money is already set aside.
Not only the above said road, days ago, residents of Nyarwimuka parish in Ruhinda Sub County had also complained of the same issue and the district has since responded to their concern regarding the poor condition of their road from Kyomera to Kakoni.
This road serves as a crucial link between Ruhinda and Bwambara Sub Counties through Nyarwimuka parish. Gershom Murera, the LC2 chairperson of Nyarwimuka parish, confirmed the ongoing road works, emphasizing the necessity of applying murram after rehabilitation.
He pointed out that their clay soils make the roads slippery and prone to erosion, and adding murram would help maintain the road for a longer period. Murera also stressed the need to address other feeder roads in similarly poor conditions in the area.
Isaac Kaharuza, political assistant to Rt Maj Gen Jim Muhwezi, the legislator for Rujumbura County and Minister of Security, mentioned that the district’s road machinery is currently in Rujumbura to maintain various roads, including the previously mentioned Nyarwimuka road and others across different districts.
Kaharuza further informed that the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) is preparing to initiate the rehabilitation of the Kasoroza- Kigaaga- Birara road, connecting Rukungiri and Kanungu districts, alongside other road projects.
