NEWS– The Police in Kanungu District on Thursday December 28th, 2023 registered an accident where 2 people died on spot and 9 others were seriously injured.
Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman Elly Maate issued a statement confirming the accident that took place in the night at Ahakatindo Karuhanga in Rutenga Sub County along Kanungu – Kabale Road in Kanungu district where motorvehicle registration number UBM 878R lost control and overturned.
Maate explained that the victims who died on spot include a 60 year old woman Tumwebaze Vanice and 45 year old Atuheire Mary.
The injured victims were named as Musinguzi Amos, Twinamatsiko Joshua, Kanyesigye Medard, Musinguzi Edison, Asiimwe Monica, Tumuhimbise Gabriel, Namanya Promise and Obedi Dick all residents of Kihihi Town Council in Kanungu District.
Maate told journalists that it is alleged that fateful motor vehicle was traveling from Kanungu District towards Kabale side and when it reached at Ahakatindo Karuhanga in Rutenga, it’s driver lost control, veered off road and overturned downhill several times, killing 2 female adults and injuring 9 others critically and he fled the scene after the accident.
Maate said that the Police was alerted and Sgt Ndyanabo and Police Constable Kifunte rushed to the scene and rescued the victims were rushed to Katate Health Centre 1V for treatment where the dead were also delivered to the Mortuary awaiting postmortem examination.
By the time of writing this story, the motor vehicle was still at the scene pending to be towed to Police for Inspector of Vehicles inspection and the accident was registered under reference number TAR 47/2023 to help in investigations as the Poliice hunts for the runway driver whose names are yet to be established.
