Museveni being received at Kidepo International Airport in Karenga District

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has told the residents of Karenga District and the entire Karamoja Sub region that they stand to get many opportunities by hosting an international Airport in their area.

The President expounded on tourism potential and viability of Kidepo Valley National Game Park that that has so far attracted direct investment for infrastructure like the international airport with span benefits to yet other untapped sectors in the area.

The President made the remarks today while launching the construction works for Kidepo International Airport in Karenga District in Karamoja Sub region in a move intended to boost tourism, Trade and investment in Karamoja.

Kidepo International Airport construction is funded by Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry from United Arab Emirates estimated to cost over US 72 million dollars with major facilities that including a 3.8 km kilometer runway, a passenger terminal and cargo terminal among other expansive aviation facilities.

President Museveni commended communities in Karenga District-near Kidepo National Park got volunteering to offer land to host the International Airport project as he assured them immense developments and returns from the project through tourism and wildlife conservation, trade among other opportunities drawn to the area.

President Museveni reaffirmed government’s resolce to protect such profitable sectors like tourism and advised people residing near Kidepo National Park to adhere to government’s strategic guidance for tourism conservation.

President Museveni tipped Global investors on the growing investment options for in Africa and Uganda in particular including a widening market for products and commended Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry from the United Arab Emirates for opting to invest in Uganda and assured them of returns on their investments with assured market.

He hinted on the growing market share of Africans that is projected to his over 30 billion people in the next 30 years from the 1.5 billion people on the continent and recounted on the gains made in Karamoja Sub region since the implementation of the disarmament exercise for cattle rustlers.

President Museveni noted that the disarmament exercise ended gun violence in Karamoja and has since resulted into unprecedented development and investments due to the prevailing peace and security in the area and confirmed plans to scale up construction of communal water dams for cattle as government works out plans to aid individual farmers acquire their own water dams for their cattle.

He reminded the people of Karamoja on the dangers of nomad Pastoralism and urged them to concentrate in their designated farming areas.

The Chairperson of Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry the company funding Kidepo International Airport construction project, Abdallah Mohamad Sultan Alowais unpacked the scope of the project that currently employs 1620 Ugandans planned to be implemented through 3 consistent phases and commended residents of Karenga District for welcoming the project with support.

Meanwhile leaders from Karamoja Sub region have praised President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for the growing investment trends in the area upon the restoration of peace and stability through the disarmament process of cattle rustlers. 

The Minister for Karamoja Affairs – designate Dr John Baptist Lokii disclosed that cement factories, marble factories, mines and Kidepo International Airport among others have transformed the lives if the residents.

Minister Lokii was speaking at tbe launch of Kedepo International Airport  in Karenga District in Karamoja Sub region which he said is tbe most attractive investment in the country.

The Ethics and Integrity minister – designate Rise Lilly Akello thanked President Yoweri Museveni for appointing leaders from Karamoja to lead the affirmative action Ministry for their area and promised to build cohesion among leaders to their areas development.

President Museveni directed the Principal Private secretary to address the remaining pledges and Commitments he made for Karenga District so that they can be fulfilled. 

The Deputy Director General of the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority Ns Olive Birungi Lumony outlined regulatory assessments conducted on Kidepo International Airport project and assured the President that it’s viable and also explained the extent of implementation of regional airports including Arua, Gulu, Lira, Kasese and Kabalega.
