President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has returned to Uganda after completing a three-day working visit to Egypt that centred on strengthening bilateral relations, promoting trade, and enhancing regional cooperation.
During the visit, President Museveni held high-level talks with his Egyptian counterpart President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, where both leaders reaffirmed the strategic importance of the Nile River and the need for equitable sharing of its waters among all Nile Basin countries.
They underscored the river’s potential to drive prosperity, unity, and sustainable development across the continent.
The two heads of state also explored avenues to boost trade between Uganda and Egypt, reduce reliance on European markets, and foster greater economic integration among African nations.
While speaking at the Egypt-Uganda Business Forum, President Museveni invited Egyptian investors to tap into Uganda’s opportunities in agriculture, manufacturing, and infrastructure, assuring them of a conducive investment climate.
The visit concluded with the signing of several landmark agreements covering trade, investment, agriculture, water management, and governance. These accords are expected to deepen the historically strong ties between Kampala and Cairo.
President Museveni also called for constructive dialogue in conflict-affected countries such as Libya, Sudan and Palestine as a regional peace and stability agenda.
On arrival at Entebbe International Airport, the President was received by the Minister for the Presidency, Hon Babirye Milly Babalanda, Commander of the Air Force, Lt. Gen Charles Okiding Deputy Inspector General of Police, James Ochaya and the Deputy Commissioner General of Prisons, Samuel Akena.
Meanwhile, the Minister for the Presidency Hon Babirye Milly Babalanda has announced that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has directed that the late Hon Canon Mary Busingye Karooro Okurut be accorded an official burial and praised her as an illustrious champion of affirmative action.
The late Canon Mary Karooro Okurut passed away on Monday, August 11th 2025, at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya and she was remembered as a distinguished leader, patriot, educator, writer, and advocate for women’s empowerment.
The government has formed a National Organizing Committee, chaired by the Minister for Presidency, Hon Milly Babirye Babalanda, along with family representatives, to oversee the funeral arrangements and burial will take place on Saturday.
Her legacy includes a long career in public service and politics and she served as a Press Secretary to the Vice President in 1993, and later as the Private Press Secretary to President Museveni from 2001 to 2004 and she was a Member of Parliament for the Bushenyi District Woman Parliamentary seat from 2006 to 2021.
Karooro Okurut was also a prolific writer who authored several books, including “The Invisible Weevil” (1998). She was a co-founder of FEMRITE also known as Uganda Women Writers Association and served as its chairperson and she also served as a columnist for the New Vision, with her last article appearing on July 22nd 2025.
