A total of 110 candidates have been lined up to contest for various positions in Kanungu District Local Government Council in the just concluded nominations exercise for local council leaders and Councillors.
According to Kanungu Electoral Commission Returning officer David Mukundane, 107 candidates were nominated for District Councillorship from Sub-counties and Town Councils while 3 candidates were successfully nominated for the LC 5 Chairperson seat.
Those duly nominated for the coveted LC 5 Chairperson seat will see the NRM Flagbearer, Rev Justus Tibesigwa tussle it with other two independent candidates who include Francis Byamukama commonly known as Kapesha from and Charles Asiimwe Bamuhata.
Kanungu District which comprises 27 sub- counties, recorded a fair representation of different political parties and independents in which the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) fielded 27 candidates while independent a total of 29.
the National Unity Platform (NUP) party presented one candidate from Nyakabungo Town Council while the People’s Front for Freedom ( PFF) party also had one candidate nominated at the district level.
Mukundane revealed that over 98% of the electoral areas in Kanungu District will have competitive elections with the NRM and independent candidates dominating the race. Among the contesting seats are the special interests groups, including representatives for people with disabilities, youth(male and female), older persons as well as women councilors at the district level.
Only one NRM female councillor went through unopposed by the close of nominations and the Returning officer further noted that two aspirants who arrived late after the deadline were unable to register, as the exercise had officially closed.
He commended the candidates for turning up early for the nomination, saying the process was conducted smoothly without major challenges and also encouraged these intending to seek nomination during the second phase, scheduled for 11th to 24th September to embark on the same spirit of early preparation.
