RUKUNGIRI- On April 27th 2025, Bishop Onesimus Asiimwe will celebrate his second anniversary as the leader of the Anglican Diocese of North Kigezi.

This milestone marks not only his personal journey but also a significant period of growth and transformation within the diocese and its community.

Over the past two years, the diocese has witnessed remarkable achievements, including the salvation of over 20,000 individuals and the confirmation of more than 9,000 new members into the Anglican faith.

A Time of Growth and Salvation

Bishop Asiimwe’s tenure has been characterized by a fervent mission to spread the Gospel and strengthen the Anglican Church in Uganda. The statistic of 20,000 people coming to faith during his leadership is a testament to the vibrant evangelistic efforts undertaken by the diocese. This surge in conversions has been fueled by various outreach programs, community engagement initiatives, and a focus on discipleship.

The bishop has emphasized the importance of personal relationships in evangelism, encouraging church members to reach out to their communities. “Every Christian has a role to play in sharing the Gospel,” he stated during a recent sermon. “Our mission is to be the hands and feet of Christ in our neighborhoods.”

Strengthening the Anglican Community

One of the most significant achievements during Bishop Asiimwe’s leadership has been the confirmation of over 9,000 individuals into the Anglican faith. This milestone reflects not only the growth of the community but also the effectiveness of the church’s catechism programs, which have been revamped under his guidance. The bishop has introduced new teaching materials and methods, ensuring that new converts have a solid foundation in their faith.

The bishop’s commitment to nurturing the spiritual lives of church members is evident in the numerous educational programs and Bible study groups that have flourished. “We want to ensure that our new members understand their faith deeply and are equipped to live it out daily,” he explained.

Revitalizing Church-Founded Schools

Another cornerstone of Bishop Asiimwe’s vision has been the revival of church-founded schools. Recognizing the critical role of education in shaping future generations, he has initiated programs aimed at restoring and enhancing these institutions. Many of these schools, once bastions of academic excellence and moral integrity, had fallen into disrepair and neglect.

Under the bishop’s leadership, efforts have been made to improve infrastructure, increase teacher training, and implement modern curricula that reflect both academic standards and Christian values. “We believe that education is a powerful tool for transformation,” he remarked. “By investing in our schools, we are investing in the future of our communities.”

Promoting Sustainable Practices

In an innovative move, Bishop Asiimwe has also encouraged the church community to engage in sustainable agricultural practices, particularly coffee farming. Recognizing that many church members rely on agriculture for their livelihoods, he has introduced initiatives to promote coffee cultivation as a means of economic empowerment.

The bishop has partnered with agricultural experts to provide training on best practices in coffee farming, including sustainable growing techniques and market access strategies. “We want our church members to not only thrive spiritually but also economically,” he stated. “By supporting coffee farming, we are helping families build better futures.”

Bringing Back the Glory of the Church

Bishop Asiimwe’s vision extends beyond mere numbers; it encompasses a holistic approach to community transformation. He has frequently spoken about the need to restore the “glory of the church,” which he defines as a vibrant, influential body of believers actively engaged in their communities.

This vision includes not only evangelism and education but also social justice initiatives, healthcare outreach, and interfaith dialogue. The bishop has been an advocate for peace and reconciliation in a region often marred by conflict and division. “The church must be a beacon of hope and a source of healing,” he emphasized.

Celebrating Achievements and Looking Ahead

As the diocese prepares to celebrate Bishop Asiimwe’s two-year anniversary, plans are underway for a grand celebration that will include various activities such as worship services, community outreach, and a special keynote address by the Bishop. The event will serve as a time of reflection on the journey thus far and a recommitment to the mission ahead.

Bishop Asiimwe has expressed gratitude for the support and dedication of the church community. “This is not just my achievement; it is a collective effort of all who have prayed, served, and worked tirelessly to advance God’s kingdom,” he said.

The upcoming anniversary celebration is not only a time to honor Bishop Onesimus Asiimwe but also an opportunity for the Anglican Diocese of North Kigezi to recommit to its mission of evangelism, education, and community transformation.

With over 20,000 souls saved and 9,000 new confirmations, the diocese stands as a testament to the power of faith in action. As the church looks to the future, it is poised to continue its vital work under the guidance of a bishop who embodies the heart of its mission.

Uganda’s Deputy Speaker of the 11th Parliament Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa Bangirana will officiate at this function and all the proceeds will go towards completion of the Emmanuel Cathedral Diocese at Kinyasano hill.
