Diocese of Kinkizi to celebrate 31 years of Existence

The Bishop of the Diocese of Kinkizi Rt  Rev Dan Zoreka has made it categorically clear that the Church has been at the forefront of spearheading development in Kanungu District right from the time the Diocese was created in 1995.

Bishop Zoreka made the remarks today while addressing a Press Conference at the Bishops Office Nyakatare in preparations for the 31st Anniversary of the Diocese of Kinkizi which will be celebrated under the theme, “Anchoured in Jesus Christ for Unity, Stability and Peace”.

The Bishop said that that the creation of Diocese of Kinkizi in 1995 was aimed at taking services closer to the christians and the First Bishop, the late Rt Rev John Wilson Ntegyereize together with his team worked hard to ensure that the Diocese which was impoverished picked up in terms of education, health, agriculture, water and sanitation in order to kick poverty out of the Diocese.

“The Government should come out and appreciate that the Church has played a big role in initiating development and planting facilities that stimulate development in the Diocese of Kinkizi which covers the entire Kanungu District ” Bishop Zoreka said.

Bishop Zoreka pointed out that it was the Diocese of Kinkizi that worked tirelessly to initiate programs aimed at integrating the Batwa pygmies community who were forced out of the forests when Bwindi Impenetrable National Park was gazetted in 1990 and currently they live a dignified life and access social services like other Ugandans.

The Diocese of Kinkizi started the Batwa Development Programme, a community based organisation that has empowered the Batwa Community by providing education and other scocial support services and the Diocese later started Bwindi Community Hospital which initiated the Health Insurance Scheme targeting the Batwa pygmies but was later rolled out to benefit the entire population.

Bishop Zoreka said that there will be thanksgiving on May 10th at St Peter’s Cathedral Nyakatare and the climax of the 31st Diocesan Celebrations will be held on May 17th at the newly acquired African Universityof Science and Management (AUSM) Campus at Kambuga where they will roll out the program to officially start the University.

Meanwhile, Bishop Zoreka has urged the Christians in Diocese of Kinkizi to direct their energies to plant trees as a one sure way of mitigating climate change challenges and protecting the environment.

The Bishop directed the Church leaders at all levels to plant fruit trees at church premises to ensure that they act as examples.
