NEWS- As Uganda prepares to commemorate the United Nations Anti-Corruption day on December 9, former Principal Judge in the High Court of Uganda, Justice Canon James Ogoola, has expressed concern about the rate at which professional standards and morals have declined in Uganda.

Justice Canon Ogoola made the remarks on Wednesday while speaking during the National Citizens Integrity Awards (NCIA) 2024 organized by ActionAid International Uganda in partnership with Local Sustainable Communities Organization (LOSCO) and other Civil Society Organizations at Protea Hotel Kampala Skyz Bukoto in Kampala.

According to a survey conducted by the Inspectorate of Government, the Ugandan loses 20 trillion shillings every year through corruption. Justice Canon Ogoola called for a return to the strict standards of professionalism and a renewed commitment to integrity.

The Country Director of ActionAid International Uganda, Xavier Ejoyi, said the national integrity awards are aimed at recognizing men and women in public service with distinction and integrity.

The Program Manager at Transparency International, expressed concern over the pervasive corruption in Uganda’s public sector, which she says continues to erode public trust, deter investment, and fuel apathy among citizens. Zawedde shared personal and regional experiences that highlight the urgent need for reform in public services.

During the function, the Kabale District Woman Member of Parliament, Catherine Ndamira Atwakire, the Kabale District Senior Probation and Social Welfare Officer, Monica Muhumuza Nzeirwe, the Assistant in charge of Kamukyira Health Center IV, Lilian Kebirungi and the Muko Health Centre IV medical superintendent, Dr Godfrey Bampabweire, were awarded certificates of recognition for fighting corruption, promoting integrity and citizens involvement in the fight against corruption.
