NEWS- President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has rallied all Ugandans to participate in tree growing to restore land for climate resilience.
The President’s remarks were contained in a speech read for him today 5th June 2024, by the Prime Minister Rt Hon Robinah Nabbanja as Uganda joined the rest of the world to celebrate World Environment Day under the theme Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.”
World Environmental Day is celebrated annually on 5th June and encourages awareness and action for the protection of the environment and here in Uganda, the day was celebrated at Mafudu Primary School Playgrounds in Sironko District.
The World Environment Day, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972, and serves as a global platform for raising awareness and promoting action for the protection of the environment and this year’s theme aligns with the urgent call for action to restore degraded landscapes, protecting and essential ecosystem services.
The event was attended by a number of Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, religious, opinion and local leaders.
Meanwhile the Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja has on behalf of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni commissioned construction works for the 39Km of Namagumba – Budadiri – Nalugugu Road in Sironko District.
The Prime Minister who was in Sironko to represent President Museveni at the world Environment day celebrations revealed that the European Union, the World Bank and Japan International cooperation will fund the 5 year project estimated to cost Ugx 129 billion including resettlement of affected persons.
Prime Minister Nabbanja noted that once the road is completed, it will improve transport access in the area by linking the population with economic opportunities and she asked Shandong Luqiao, a Chinese company which has been contracted to undertake the construction works to do quality work.
She said that this project is aligned with Uganda’s Vision 2040 that seeks to harness the country’s potential growth opportunities in agriculture, tourism, strategic geographical location, and trade.
