Kanungu RDC addressing Kayungwe Sub-county residents

Kanungu Resident District Commissioner Ambrose Mwesigye Amanyire has issued a number of directives aimed at maintaining law and order in Kayungwe Sub-county as the community prepares for the official opening of mining activities.

While speaking at a security meeting with residents Mwesigye Amanyire who was accompanied by the District Police Commander and the District Internal Security Officer, emphasised the importance of proper identification of people who live in the area and documentation in order in order to have an organised community.

The directive comes at a time when there is population increase in Kayungwe Sub-county due to gold rush with people from as far Rwanda and Mubende to join the gold mining which has put pressure on resources like housing, food and sanitation and created insecurity in the area.

The RDC made it categorically clear that anyone be it a Ugandan or foreigner without a valid identification document will not be allowed into Kayungwe Sub-county especially in the gold mining town center of Katoma.

The Mining site was however closed in early July by the Minister of State for Minerals Hon Phiona Nyamutoro saying that there was need for regulated mining and trade in the area to benefit all stakeholders that include the government, the miners and the residents.

RDC Mwesigye Amanyire, however said that the guidelines have been issued following reports of several criminal activities in the area and are intended to curb potential security threats, especially given Kanungu’s location as a border district.

It’s reported that after the closure of the mining activities by the Minister, many people settled in Katoma Trading Centre, and most of these remain unemployed and idle which has created insecurity.

The District Police Commander Azira Grace, informed the residents that a new Officer in Charge has been posted to Kayungwe to help contain the increasing crime in the area.

DPC Azira said that due to increased crime, the Police will carry out night patrols and anyone found moving 8n the area without identification documents will be arrested and handle them according to the law.

He particularly warned the residents on cases of defilement which he said will not be compromised and anyone suspected of the crime will be immediately arrested.

Kayungwe Sub-county LC 3 Chairman Bataringaya Gastone thanked the District Security team with coming up with the measures that he hopes will contain crime in the area and asked the residents to cooperate with them.

Bataringaya however noted that some people especially those who have joined the mining activities have compromised the security and sanitation situations in the area which has necessitated new measures to be put in place to safeguard the lives of the residents.

The Chairman of Katoma Trading Centre Byaruhanga Emmy Kamunyu told the District Security Team that ever since the gold mining activities were closed, the population has become idle which has compromised and appealed to the security to make a decision that can open up activities and make the mining activities in the area thrive.
