NEWS– The Great Lakes Regional University in Kanungu District Alumni have elected a Steering Committee aimed at running the operations of the organisation to support the institution that moulded them into what they are.
The members who attended a meeting at Goro Cottages in Kihihi Town Council elected Rwakarara Alfred as Chairman and will be Deputised by Akankwasa Primrose and Muhumuza Jackness as Secretary General while Niwagaba Ambrose is the Treasurer.
Others who were elected on the committee include Ms Nansinguza Joan as Vice Secretary, Mubangizi Hakiza Apollo in charge of Discipline, Akampurira Andrew in charge of Sports, Biryomumeisho Irad in charge of Publicity, Ainebyoona Seth in charge of Welfare, Mumbere Ronald in charge of Kasese, Nareeba Justus in charge of Bwindi and Kayonza, Turyakira Robert in charge of Kabale and Baguma Ivan in charge of Rukungiri Area.
The Alumni who are currently employed by the government of Uganda and in the Private Sector agreed to formulate clear objectives and mission statement that will steer their organisation.
According to Ambrose Niwagaba, they agreed to meet again to reveiw and agree if the objectives formulated will help them realise their targets.
The Group started off their programs with holding a meeting with the new management of Great Lakes Regional University at their Bushura Campus where they planted trees and also donated sports equipment that included footballs to promote games and sports at the University.
The Great Lakes Regional University Alumi Association evolved from a Whassup Group with over 250 members who met after they lost one of their former alumnus Natukunda Annet (RIP) and Muramira Oscar (RIP) and they have since then they have grown stronger as a unit and have since taken steps to making it officia as an alumni association.
The event was intended to bring them back together again as people who studied from Great Lakes Regional College which later advanced to become a University.
They had an interaction with the current University management and continuing students who included Ngabirano Richard the current Academic Registrar who appreciated them for their initiative to have the association.
Ngabirano told them that they’re the greatest stakeholders of the University having gone through training at the University and having practical experience in the field of work and know what needs to be done to improve service delivery at the University.Â
Ngabirano added that the institution has graduated 1,854 graduates for different courses since it was first started, and it was important for the alumni association to try to track them and work together and pledged to support them.
The new Director of the University Rev Fr Dr Abel Bainomugisha who represented the new team of the University development partners applauded the alumni team for coming back as witnesses of the service the University is providing.
Beinomugisha expressed how impressed he is for seeing a good number of graduates who studied from Great Lakes Regional University take up different positions in Kanungu service sector both government and private which was a different story back when he was serving on the district service commission and Kanungu lacked qualified prospective employees.
On behalf of the alumni group, the elected chairman Alfred Rwakarara appreciated the efforts being made by the new management to streamline University operations and promised their support to the University community whenever called upon.
