NEWS– The Kabale territorial Police have apprehended Federisi Akankwasa, the municipality commercial officer, from his hideout on charges of obtaining money by false pretence and issuing a bouncing cheque amounting to forty-nine million Uganda shillings (49m UGX).

This follows allegations that Akankwasa sold an estate in Kakoba, Mbarara city, to Leo Mbabazi in December 2022 for an agreed-upon price of Ugx 550 million, having received a Ugx 100 million deposit. However, Akanwasa subsequently resold the property to another individual, falsely claiming it was no longer available for sale.

ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, informed journalists that instead of the suspect repaying Mbabazi the Ugx 100 million deposit, he returned Ugx 50,250,000=, leaving a balance of Ugx 49 million.

Akanwasa then issued a cheque for the remaining amount, which later bounced in February 2023.

The case was officially reported to the Kabale police on 13th March 2023, prompting a search for the suspect who had been in hiding since then. Akankwasa was eventually apprehended within Kabale and is currently in custody.

Maate emphasized that, upon conclusion of the investigation, the suspect will be brought before the courts to face charges accordingly.

The charges of obtaining money by false pretense and issuing a bouncing cheque have been formally registered at Kabale Central Police station under the reference number CRB 226/2023.
