Man arrested with stolen goat, killed by mob

BUSHENYI- An angry mob has lynched a man in Bushenyi district for catching him red-handed cooking stolen goat’s meat and its skin.

The deceased has only been identified by as Kiyoyo a resident of Nkoni Village, Kararo parish, Kyeizooba Sub – county in Bushenyi district who was on Sunday 17th December afternoon assaulted by an angry mob who found him cooking goats meat as well as having the brown skin suspected to be the stolen goat from Nuwagaba Peace a resident of Kitagata village also in Kyeizooba Sub – county.

Facts on ground indicate that on Sunday at around 6:30am, Nuwagaba found her goat brown in colour valued at approximately Ugx 350,000 had been stolen from her kitchen, Nuwagaba immediately alerted neighbors who responded and recovered a red cap and a knife near the kitchen where the goat had been tied.

They then began searching in the nearby banana plantation where they discovered blood droplets and followed up to Rwentuha – Bugongi road where the droplets stopped.

The neighbors Lamech, Dampson and Mwebembezi identified the red cap to be belonging to Nkabigumira, a son to Tibahiika and they suspected him to be at Kiyoyo’s (deceased’s) place and during the search, they were joined by GISO Kyeizooba one Ben. On reaching the deceased’s place, he was found cooking goat’s meat and they as well recovered a goat’s brown hide from his house.

On revealing the source of the meat, the deceased said Nkabigumira brought a goat at his home early in the morning, they slaughtered it and Nkabigumira took the meat for sale at Bugongi leaving him with offals which he was found cooking. 

The GISO arrested Kiyoyo, now the deceased with his wife Medrine and as he was escorting them to Mwengura Police, it’s when he was confronted by angry residents who began assaulting the deceased with sticks on allegations that he was a serial offender.

The GISO called Police for intervention and by the time the officers responded, the deceased had been seriously assaulted. They rescued him battling for his life but died on the way as he was being rushed to hospital for medical attention.

Police opened a case file of murder by mob action at Bushenyi Central Police Station under reference number CRB 1154/2023, recorded relevant statements, visited and documented the crime scene and later conveyed the body to Kitagata Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination. Nkabigumira (suspect) was apprehended from Bugongi where he was found selling roasted goat’s meat.

The Greater Bushenyi Police Spokesperson SSP Martial Tumusiime confirmed the incident to this publication stressing that inquiries are at hand to identify the mob suspects and have them arrested.
