Tea farming in Uganda

KAMPALA- Uganda’s tea farmers, under their umbrella association, want a policy that will regulate tea saying that price fluctuations heavily affect the farmers.   

Led by Igara West MP Gaffa Mbwatekamwa, they have been appearing before the parliament’s committee on Trade and Tourism chaired by Gomba District Woman MP Sylvia Nayebale to respond to their petition before being scrutinized by the committee members.

Recently farmers led by MP Gaffa Mbwatekamwa, presented a petition outlining 11 key demands, including a 75% subsidy on fertilizers in the first phase to establish a self-sustaining fertilizer mechanism.

Mbwatekamwa says the regulations will help to uplift the quality of Tea so help them compete on the international market.

Mbwatekamwa says the farmers can no longer acquire loans from the Banks because they view the tea farmers as people who cannot pay back their Loans which affecting them greatly adding it difficult to grow tea without a hand commercial

The Trade Committee Chairperson Sylvia Nayebale says the committee has considered the presentation of the Tea farmers; she adds that her committee will make recommendations to parliament for appropriate action to improve the quality of tea in Uganda.
