NEWS– The Police Traffic and Road Safety Police are to conduct an operation against drivers and riders without driving licenses in an effort to curb the persistent high road crashes that claim people’s lives.
This comes after the Directorate of Traffic registered 81 deaths and 381 serious injuries in road accidents that occurred last week from 10th to 16th of March 2024.
Among the deaths, 35 were pedestrians, 22 were motorcyclists and 14 were passengers of motorcycles with accidents at Kibimba along Iganga-Tororo highway occurred on 11th March and that of Kyankwanzi were the most dangerous accidents last week.
The Traffic Police Spokesperson Micheal Kananura told journalists yesterday that the law prohibits drivers and riders without valid driving licenses, expired licenses and out of class licenses to be on the road and this will be controlled starting this week.
He adds that the causes of accidents that occurred last week were due to speeding, driving too close and careless driving which are mainly practiced by those drivers who lack driving permits.
The enforcement operations comes ahead of the Easter Week when many motorists are expected to travel upcountry for the festive season and Kananura asked whoever is intending to drive to ensure that has the driving permit and the vehicle is in good mechanical condition and must follow the road safety regulations.
