The Church of Uganda has noted with concern a video of an individual dressed in a Bishop’s clerical shirt, declaring his intention to contest for Member of Parliament in a constituency within the Buganda region.
The Provincial Secretary Rev Can William Ongenf has today come out and clarifiex that this individual is not a Bishop or Clergy of Church of Uganda and should be ignored as such.
Can Ongeng said that rhe distinctive vestments of Bishops in the Church of Uganda including clerical shirts, mitres, rochets, chimeres, stoles and other episcopal garments were officially gazetted and registered as trademarks with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau in 2024.
Canon Ongeng made it categorically clear that these vestments are sacred symbols of ecclesiastical authority and are legally protected under the law and any unauthorized use or misrepresentation of these vestments for political purposes, entertainment, or any other reason amounts to trademark infringement and misleads the public.
Canon Ongeng said that the Church of Uganda will not hesitate to take legal action against individuals who misuse these vestments without express written permission from the Church and called upon the general public to be vigilant and seek clarification from the Provincial Secretariat or the relevant Diocese in cases of doubt anyone putting them on
