NEWS- Kanungu District is poised to benefit from the Dr. Dip project under UNHCR, commencing in the upcoming financial year. Eng. Sam Kajojo, the Kanungu District Chairperson, made this announcement during a District Council session presided over by Speaker Frank Byaruhanga on November 22, 2023.
Eng. Kajojo revealed that the project will provide vital support for infrastructure needs, focusing on administration, schools, water, roads, and other essentials. Additionally, they have requested a study tour from UNHCR to learn from districts that have already benefited from the Dr. Dip project.
However, amidst these prospects, Kanungu Resident District Commissioner Ambrose Mwesigye Amanyire expressed concern over the rising number of murder cases in the district, largely stemming from domestic violence. Mwesigye urged leaders of faith-based organizations to address anger management with their followers.
Notably, a recent high court sitting handled 42 cases, predominantly murder cases, resulting in convictions and sentences ranging from 15 to 50 years, presided over by Justice Tom Chemutai.
In the same council session, new committees were formed, and chairpersons elected. Notably, Hon. Tumwesigye Rogers, representing Kihiihi Town Council, secured the Chairperson position for the Works committee. He expressed gratitude for the support and pledged to collaborate for improved roads and infrastructure.
The Finance Committee saw Hon. Rogers Tutuhukire emerging victorious, while Hon. Rutazana Silver clinched the Chairperson role for Social Works and Services. Hon. Joshua Rukundo retained his position as Chairperson for Production, Natural Resources, and Commercial Services, as did Hon. Anita Kakuru for Gender.
The council also addressed concerns about the declining tea prices, leading farmers to contemplate uprooting tea plantations. Speaker Frank Byaruhanga assured farmers of an extra-ordinary Council meeting, inviting ministers for Agriculture, Animal and Fisheries, and Energy to explain the reduced tea prices and address electricity issues at Mpungu-Kayonza tea factory.
The Speaker stressed that all area MPs would attend the extra-ordinary Council to follow up on the ministers’ responses.
