Abandoned Grader

NEWS- The Police in Mbarara district are hunting for a driver attached to Mbarara district local government on allegations of using government motor-grader to do private work.

The officer in charge Bwizibwera Police station, ASP Omara Raphael told our reporter that the suspect, who is currently on the run, was found opening a road using the equipment for one of the residents in Rukanja trading centre, Rubindi-Ruhumba Town council without official authorization from authorities.

Omara added that preliminary investigation indicates that the equipment was diverted by the suspect from doing official work on that day in Rubindi-Ruhumba Town council where there is an ongoing road maintenance.

Omara said the suspect was found by residents who alerted police on the fateful day. Upon landing on information that officers were coming for him, the suspect abandoned the equipment on site and took off.

He said the district mechanical engineer William Bananuka, has already recorded a statement over the misuse of government property as the search for the driver continues.

The impounded road equipment registration number UG 2014W is currently parked at Bwizibwera Police station.

The Mbarara District boss Didas Tabaro said the equipment was diverted by the driver without official permission stressing that the implicated driver must be held accountable.

Tabaro said the rampant misuse of the District road equipment and vehicles for personal gain must stop with immediate effect, adding that it’s affecting service delivery within the district.
