NEWS– Makerere University with funding from Makerere University Research and innovation fund has completed their research about Youths as leaders of climate change mitigation and adaptation in Uganda a case study of Kasese District with a recommendation to all stakeholders to promote youths participation in the climate change campaign.

Dr. Kalidi Rajab the lead researcher indicates that structures that support youth involvement in climate change mitigation and adaptation from a key informant interviews are policy and national youth action plan.

According to the research findings, it was observed that most youth fail to participate because of the limited funds, limited knowledge on climate change, limited involvement of youth in climate change decision making, limited interest of youth in climate change initiatives and failure to own property such as land and absence of visible role models and success stories in youth led climate actions as some of the challenges of involving youth in climate change mitigation and adaptation.

As a solution to address the challenges, he reported that there is need to allocate more funds for youth climate change initiatives, build capacity of the youth on climate change initiatives, participation of youth in climate change decisions making and mentorship of youth on climate change mitigation and adaptation initiatives among others.

Mr. Jimmy Muhindo Mutsumba the Kasese Municipal youth councilor noted that promoting youth awareness on climate change through youth friendly channels and platforms such as social Media, use of celebrity personalities such as Musicians to deliver key climate change massages and organize climate change debates
